BURY is a town situated on the River Irwell it is 8 miles northwest of Manchester and 5.5 miles east of Bolton.
Historically Bury was a Lancashire Mill Town, but became part of the Greater Manchester County in 1974.
Bury is famous for Sir Robert Peel, a man who twice became British Prime Minister and was also home secretary on two occasions. In 1829 during his first stint as home secretary, Sir Robert formed the metropolitan police force. He was honoured for this when the newly founded police officers were nick-named “Bobbies” after him.
